Career Start
Career Start supports Queensland job seekers to start their career or move into more skilled roles or full-time employment.
Eligibility Under Career Start
- a qualification in a certificate III under the general training pathway and an apprenticeship/traineeship, noting that if the apprenticeship/traineeship is done first, the student is no longer eligible to access a general training pathway qualification under Career Start
or - two apprenticeships/traineeships at either a certificate II or III level, including school-based apprenticeships and traineeships (SATs).
General Training Pathway
To access a subsidised training place under Career Start, a student must meet the following criteria:
- aged 15 years or older and not be a school student
- permanently reside in Queensland
- be an Australian citizen, or Australian permanent resident (includes humanitarian entrant), or a temporary resident with the right visa and work permits on the pathway to permanent residency, or a New Zealand citizen
- not already have a certificate III or higher qualification completed within the last 10 years (qualifications completed as a school student, and foundation skills qualifications don’t count)
- not be enrolled in another qualification, even if it’s on hold or deferred, whether funded by the Department of Trade, Employment and Training or not (foundation skills qualifications don’t count).
Along with the eligibility criteria above, specific entry requirements or exemptions may apply to certain funded qualifications and skill sets. These are set by industry or sector requirements, as well as national training package guidelines.
Career Boost
Helps Queenslanders to level-up at work, enabling them to grow and apply their skills to existing or new roles, and support productivity growth and workplace innovation.
Under Career Boost, an eligible individual may access:
- one subsidised training place in either a certificate IV, diploma, or advanced diploma qualification under the general training pathway;
or - a higher-level apprenticeship/traineeship at certificate IV or above; and
- up to two subsidised skill sets in priority industries or sectors as part of the program.
General Training Pathway
To access a subsidised training place under Career Start, a student must meet the following criteria:
- aged 15 years or older and not be a school student
- permanently reside in Queensland
- be an Australian citizen, or Australian permanent resident (includes humanitarian entrant), or a temporary resident with the right visa and work permits on the pathway to permanent residency, or a New Zealand citizen
- not already have a certificate IV or higher including a tertiary qualification completed within the last 10 years (qualifications completed as a school student, and foundation skills qualifications don’t count)
- not be enrolled in another qualification, even if it’s on hold or deferred, whether funded by the Department of Trade, Employment and Training or not (foundation skills qualifications don’t count).

For an Apprenticeship or Traineeship Pathway for either Career Start or Career Boost
To be eligible, you must:
- have entered into a training contract for a qualification that is funded by us and be registered on our systems
- if you’re from overseas, have a visa allowing you to work in Australia
- not be enrolled in another qualification
- not have already completed 2 apprenticeship or traineeship qualifications (including a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship) within the last 10 years.
